About
Dr. Adrian Kasaj, DDS, MSc, PhD is a Professor of Periodontology in the Department of Periodontology and Operative Dentistry at the University Medical Center Mainz, Germany. In 2002 he received his Dr.med.dent degree from the University of Mainz and then continued postgraduate training in Periodontology (2002–2005) at the same university.
He became a certified Specialist in Periodontology of the German Society of Periodontology (DGParo) in 2006 and also of the European Dental Association (EDA) in 2007. In 2009 he completed his PhD thesis (Habilitation) and was appointed as an Associate Professor. He became a Visiting Professor in the Department of Periodontology at Timisoara University, Romania in 2012. In 2014 he completed the post-graduate program “Master of Science in Oral Implantology” (German Society of Implantology/Steinbeis University Berlin) and in the same year was awarded the “Doctor honoris causa” (Dr.h.c.) degree by the University of Timisoara. In 2016 he was appointed as a Professor of Periodontology at Mainz University and became an ITI fellow in 2018. He is the editor of the book “Gingival recession management” (Springer) and has published more than 100 original articles and reviews. His field of interest: soft tissue substitutes in periodontal plastic surgery, adjunctive antimicrobial therapies, biomaterials in regenerative periodontal therapy.
Lecture
Current concepts in reconstructive periodontal surgery
The management of teeth periodontally compromised by deep intraosseous lesions has been a major therapeutic challenge for many years. For this purpose, various surgical techniques and biomaterials have been investigated in an attempt to reconstruct lost or damaged periodontal tissues. Thus, reconstruction of periodontal tissues may be achieved by application of barrier membranes, grafts, biological agents, and their combinations. However, although reconstructive procedures are widely accepted as safe and effective, there is a high variability in treatment outcomes. Recently, minimally invasive surgical and non-surgical treatment options have been introduced with the aim to minimize tissue trauma, decrease patient morbidity and simplify the treatment procedure.
The goal of this lecture is to update clinicians on the recent advances in biomaterials and surgical techniques in reconstructive periodontal procedures.

Purpose and main topics
This course is designed to give the participant a comprehensive overview of different procedures that can be used for regenerative therapy in intrabony and furcation defects. The participant will learn:
- Use of different biomaterials and techniques for the treatment of intrabony and furcation defects
- Minimal invasive surgical techniques (Papilla preservation techniques)
- Choice of sutures, different suturing techniques
- Hands-on training on pig jaws
